π² EcoTrade Board Game
The main outcome of the project is the EcoTrade board game β a co-created educational tool that brings sustainability and international trade to life. Through interactive play, students simulate managing real-world logistics and green business decisions while trainers facilitate learning about the balance between profit, growth, and environmental impact.
Components include:
Game Board & Growth Tracker
The game board is based on a European map and allows players to visualise trade routes, regions and transport decisions. It helps learners understand how goods move across Europe and how route choices affect time, growth and environmental impact. The board also includes a Growth tracker, which allows players to monitor company development during the game.
Shipment Cards
Shipment cards represent the goods that players must transport across Europe. Each card includes information such as the type of shipment, route, transport options and values related to Time, Growth and Impact. These cards help learners understand how logistics decisions are made and how different transport choices can create different environmental and economic consequences.
Event & Incident Cards
Event cards introduce unexpected situations during the game, such as delays, customs problems, weather issues, strikes, transport disruptions or other incidents. These cards make the game more realistic by showing that international trade and logistics are affected by risks and external factors. They also encourage problem-solving, adaptation and strategic thinking.
Upgrade Cards
Upgrade cards represent investments that companies can make to improve their sustainability and efficiency. These may include greener transport options, renewable energy, waste reduction, route optimisation, improved logistics systems or other responsible business practices. They help learners understand how companies can reduce environmental impact while continuing to grow.
Upgrades Cards 2 (simplified mode)
The Upgrades Version 2 cards were developed for the simplified game mode. In this version, upgrade effects are easier to manage because all card effects follow the same logic. This makes the game more accessible for beginners, younger learners or groups that need a lower-complexity version before playing the main mode.
Player Boards
Each player has a company board used to organise shipments, upgrades, transport decisions and resources during gameplay. The player boards help learners follow their own progress, manage company strategy and understand the connection between actions, growth, time and environmental impact.
Tokens
The game includes printable tokens used to track important gameplay elements such as Time, Growth, Impact, transport choices and company actions. Tokens support visual and hands-on learning, making abstract concepts easier to understand and follow during the game.
Rulebook
The Rulebook explains how to set up and play the game. It includes the rules, game phases, card explanations, scoring system and gameplay structure. It supports both teachers and learners in understanding the game independently.
Trainer's Guide
The Trainer's Guide supports educators in using EcoTrade as a learning tool. It explains the educational objectives of the game, how to facilitate gameplay, how to connect the game to VET topics, and how to lead reflection activities after playing.
